Duo CD (2011) – $12
Duo is the 2011 Hickory Strings release featuring an original collection of duets for mandolin and banjo. A wonderfully varied album, the duo crosses many boundaries of genre and creates a truly unique sound that is unclassifiable. The album was recorded and mastered by top-notch engineers (Garrett Sawyer at Northfire Recording Studio and Jeff Lipton at Peerless Mastering) and the result is a pristine sound that will make you feel like you are in a concert hall with the duo. The album includes detailed liner notes about the compositions. Check out a review of the album by clicking here.
Patches is a trio album. The record features 11 new Hickory Strings compositions with Geoff Brown on mandolin and guitar, Mark Whitaker on banjo, and bassist Gian Pangaro. The album was recorded live with no overdubs and very few edits, resulting in an exciting new sound for the group.
Geoff Brown and Hickory Strings is the product of a year-long collaboration with bassist/banjoist Mark Whitaker. The record features original compositions for mandolin, upright bass, banjo, and guitar and arrangements of traditional Celtic tunes. Difficult to classify, the music could be grouped with modern “newgrass” music, combining elements of Celtic, bluegrass, funk, classical, and jazz music.
Portrait is a collection of music for piano, violin, and cello composed during his time spent as a classical composition student at Tufts University. Included in this collection of tunes are two three-movement piano trios, one of which resulted from his honors thesis focusing on the music of French composers Ravel, Fauré, and Debussy. The recording features pianist John McDonald, cellist Karl Cronin, and producer/engineer Dan Cantor.
Self-Reliance is an album of acoustic guitar and mandolin compositions exploring different tunings and fingerstyle techniques. Containing a mix of melancholy, playful, and powerful pieces, the record’s intricate textures and rhythms are rich with expression.
Rainy Day consists of original compositions for acoustic guitar and cello combining elements of classical and folk music. Sensitive and subtle, the album is full of delicate interplay between instruments and expressive melodies. The record features Karl Cronin on cello.
Weekend is an experimental side project composed, arranged, and recorded in a single weekend. A significant departure from my acoustic recordings, all the sounds on this album were recorded with an electric guitar and bass, and computer generated sounds. The music is heavily influenced by some of my favorite electric guitarists: Joe Satriani, Tim Miller, John Scofield, Scott Henderson, and Wayne Krantz.
